Acute Back Pain
Westbrook Family Chiropractic offers treatment for acute back pain in Calgary. To deal with acute low back pain, existing research supports the use of chiropractic and other conservative measures. Conservative therapy that attempts to correct the problem is a much better solution than attempting to mask the pain. Acute back pain can be associated with trauma or may be the result of cumulative repetitive strain or injury.
For cases of acute back pain, care within our clinic begins with three treatments within four days, with the possibility of further care, based upon the patient’s response to treatment. Chiropractic treatment is individualized. Treatment may include spinal manipulative therapy, muscle techniques such as Graston to reduce scar tissue, in addition to stretching or home advice to reduce pain and facilitate recovery.
Back pain will generally be associated with joint pain caused on the surface of the joint. This is characterized by joint inflammation and associated muscle spasm. Spinal manipulation serves to gently restore mobility and reduce joint inflammation. As inflammation decreases over time so does the intensity and frequency of the pain.
Ice is a great choice for acute back pain. Heat might feel good initially but as time passes, it can actually increase pain. Heat can be applied safely if, and only if, the patient follows it with ice. To apply ice appropriately, it should be put on the affected area for ten minutes, taken off for ten minutes and reapplied for an additional ten minutes. This will facilitate recovery. Discussing the importance of healthy movement with a qualified health professional is important. Movement into joint pain can increase inflammation and slow recovery. Yet gentle movement into muscle strain can decrease tissue inflammation and speed recovery.
